In 2019, a World Bank statistic highlighted that 87% of Nigeria’s poorest population resided in the northern region. Around the same time, we had the opportunity to attend the Microsoft West Africa event in Abuja, where we saw firsthand the immense potential of Microsoft products to positively impact communities. It became clear that by equipping people with digital skills, we could not only enhance job opportunities but also empower communities to overcome poverty.
Hriscare International Foundation is a local grassroots foundation which focuses on creating a peaceful and sustainable community for a better life and society at large. Our objectives are focused on providing lasting solutions to the current challenges facing Quality Education, Healthcare, Water and Sanitation, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
So far, we have been able to coach and train over 5,000 children in building peaceful and sustainable communities for a better life. We aim at providing free health services to people who cannot afford medical bills. Our focus has been on Sickle Cell patients, and providing assistance to people challenged mentally. In line with this, we recently partnered with a rehabilitation centre to provide free medical consultations for the people challenged mentally, as part of activities we scheduled to commemorate the World Mental Health Day in 2021. In 2019, we also started a digital and entrepreneurship boot camp for youths and have been empowering youths in their various communities.
Hriscare Foundation in collaboration with Microsoft would be launching this initiative, aimed at helping youths in the Northern part of Nigeria to acquire the necessary digital skills. A pilot project would commence in Plateau State, and extend to other parts of Northern Nigeria, In 2019, a research from the World Bank has shown that 87% of the poor people in Nigeria are located in the Northern region of the country. Hence, this initiative will help bridge this gap by educating and empowering the youths in Northern Nigeria on these digital skills.
Digital technologies would be key to narrowing this divide, not only because they can expand the reach and accessibility of the training, but because proficiency in these skills is in top demand. This initiative is going to provide meaningful help to 300 youths by the end of 2021. Our activities are focused on:
- Data and analytics to understand in-demand skills and jobs
Free access to learning paths and comprehensive resources to help people develop the skills
needed for in-demand jobs.
Connecting skills to opportunities through industry recognized certifications and powerful job
seeker tools.
